Golf Simulator Soundproofing: Stop the Thump, $10-$250

The day my home simulator stopped being fun was not the day I missed a shot. It was the day my wife came downstairs at 9 pm and said, politely, that she could hear every single ball from the living room. I had spent my budget on the launch monitor, the enclosure, and the impact screen, and exactly zero dollars on sound. That was a mistake I want you to skip.

Every home simulator builder discovers the noise problem after purchase, because nobody talks about it before. A golf ball hitting a screen at 90 mph produces a low thump that travels through drywall, studs, and floor joists into the rest of the house. The acoustic foam the commercial sim vendors sell you absorbs echo inside the room and does almost nothing to stop the thump your spouse hears in the next room.

The whole category comes down to one distinction. Sound absorption kills echo and reverb so the room sounds better to you. Sound blocking, which requires mass, stops noise from traveling through the wall. Absorption is not blocking. Buy foam for your own ears and buy mass if you want the rest of the house to go quiet.

Mass-Loaded Vinyl (MLV): The Layer That Actually Blocks ($2.50 per sq ft)

If you buy one thing for noise, buy mass-loaded vinyl. MLV is a dense rubber-like sheet, usually 1 pound per square foot, that you hang on walls or staple over studs to add the mass a sound wave cannot easily push through. It is the single most effective add-on you can buy without ripping out drywall.

Acoustic Foam Panels: The Echo Killer ($15โ€“$40 per 12-pack)

Acoustic foam panels are the wedge or egg-crate tiles you see in every recording studio, and they are the cheapest way to make a sim room stop sounding like a concrete echo chamber. A 12-pack of 1-inch, 12-by-12-inch panels runs $15 to $40, with the JBER 12-pack around $25 being the well-reviewed standard. You will want two or three packs for a garage.

What works: they absorb the mid and high frequencies, so the sharp crack of impact and the ringing echo disappear. The room stops sounding like a cave, which matters because a loud, echoing room makes the game feel more chaotic than it is.

What does not work, and read this twice: foam panels do not block sound. They will not make your wife hear the thump any less through the wall. They change how the room sounds to you inside it, nothing more. If you buy foam expecting to quiet the rest of the house, you have bought the wrong product.

Verdict: Buy a couple packs after the MLV. They are cheap and they make the room pleasant to be in.

Soundproofing Blankets and Acoustic Curtains: The Flexible Middle Ground ($30โ€“$135)

For the wall that is awkward to hang MLV on, or for a sim you want to be able to reconfigure, blankets and heavy acoustic curtains are the flexible option. Cheap moving blankets, a 12-pack of 80-by-72-inch blankets for $30 to $40, add real mass and some absorption when you hang them over a shared wall. Step up to a purpose-built acoustic curtain like the JaneTech soundproof curtain (roughly $60 to $135 depending on size), and you get a multi-layer design with a felt core that does more of both.

What works: they hang from a rod or hooks in minutes, they can be taken down, and they do a passable job on both echo and some transmission, especially mid-frequency sound. For a rented space or a sim that shares a room with a home office, they are the least permanent fix.

What does not work: they are nowhere near as effective at blocking low-frequency impact as MLV, and they look like what they are, a blanket hung on a wall. Treat them as a supplement to MLV, not a substitute.

Verdict: Buy these for the non-shared walls or a temporary setup.

Acoustic Ceiling Baffles and Tiles: For the Sound That Goes Up ($50โ€“$180)

Sound does not care that your shared wall is treated if it can travel up through the ceiling. If the room above the sim is a bedroom or a living space, the ceiling is the path you forgot. Hanging acoustic baffles, like the VIVO faux-wood beam baffles around $53 each or a pair of 48-by-24-inch hanging panels around $180, absorb the sound that rises, and acoustic drop-ceiling tiles do the same for a suspended ceiling.

What works: baffles hang from the ceiling on cables and kill the vertical echo, and they make a huge difference in a basement sim with a bare floor-joist ceiling. It is the most overlooked surface in the room.

What does not work: baffles absorb, they do not block, and if there is a bedroom directly above, absorption alone will not stop the thump. For real ceiling isolation you need MLV or insulation between the joists, which is a contractor job. Do not overspend on baffles expecting them to silence the room above.

Verdict: Buy if the ceiling is bare and echo is your main complaint.

Door Seals and Weatherstripping: The Cheapest Win ($10โ€“$25)

The fastest, cheapest noise fix is also the one most builders skip: the gaps. A standard interior door leaves a half-inch gap at the bottom and gaps around the frame, and sound pours through them. A under-door draft stopper like the Holikme or MAXTID (about $10 to $15) plus self-adhesive weatherstripping around the frame (a few dollars) seals the door for under $25 total.

What works: closing the air gaps around a door does more for sound leakage than any amount of foam on the walls, because sound travels through air gaps almost unimpeded. For the price of a sleeve of balls, you can cut the door leakage dramatically.

What does not work: it only fixes the door, and it will not help if the walls themselves are the problem. Do this first, because it is cheap, but do not mistake it for a complete fix.

Verdict: Do this today. It costs $25 and takes 20 minutes.

What I Would Actually Buy

For a garage sim on a budget, the minimum viable setup is this: one Soundsulate MLV roll on the shared wall ($249) plus two packs of foam panels ($50) plus a door seal ($25). Total about $325, and it stops most of the transmission while killing the echo. That is less than a single lesson package.

If you only want to spend $50, do the door seal and two packs of foam. You will not stop the thump, but the room will stop echoing and the door will stop leaking, which is most of the perceived noise to anyone outside.

If the room directly above or next to the sim is the problem, add MLV to the ceiling and a second roll on the second wall, and consider having insulation blown between the joists. That is the point where it stops being a weekend project and starts being a contractor job, and it is worth it if the sim is going to get used for years.
