Golf Subscription Boxes: Skip Most, Buy Aids Instead

The golf subscription box is a beautiful business model. The company picks the items, you pay a monthly fee, and every month a box shows up with a surprise you did not choose and would not have bought. If you are honest, that is most of what these boxes are: a recurring bill for a mystery of leftover inventory.

I am not going to cheerlead these. Most of them are not worth it. The reality of the five boxes people actually ask about is mostly bad, and there is a better way to spend the same money.

The Short Answer

Buy the training aids you actually want instead. A SKLZ Gold Flex ($50), a Tour Striker Smart Ball ($47), and a PuttOut Pressure Putt Trainer ($30) cost $127 total and fix your game. A year of a gear box costs $600-$1,400 and mostly lands you shirts. If you insist on a box, exactly one is worth a look, and it is not the one with the biggest ad budget.

1. MullyBox (Mully): $125 per Quarter

The rebranded MullyBox ships quarterly, not monthly, which is its best feature. $125 a quarter gets you roughly $250 of claimed value in apparel and accessories from real golf brands. Quarterly shipping means four boxes a year instead of twelve, so the filler pile grows slower.

What works: the accessories are usually legit. Things like training aids, ball markers, gloves, and towels show up alongside a shirt or two. It is the closest any of these get to a box where you might actually use most of it.

What does not work: it is still a fashion gamble. You do not pick sizes for everything, the style is whatever the stylist picked, and you are paying $125 for a surprise. If you do not love the look, half the box is useless.

Verdict: the best of the bunch, but only if you want gear variety more than value. If you want specific training aids, this is still the wrong purchase.

2. ShortPar4: $59.95 to $119 per Month

The longest-running golf apparel box. The Fairway Box is $59.95 a month for two to three apparel pieces. The flagship is $119 a month for “up to $220 in retail value.” Apparel only, no training aids.

What works: if your wardrobe is stale and you want a new polo or quarter-zip every month without shopping, it delivers that.

What does not work: $119 a month is $1,428 a year for surprise clothes. Reddit is full of “buyer beware” threads about quality and value, and the cancellation process has drawn complaints for years. You are paying retail-plus for clothing you did not choose.

Verdict: skip it. $1,400 a year buys a lot of specific gear you actually wanted. The surprise is not worth the price.

3. Swinger Box: $49.95 to $99.95 per Box

Apparel, golf balls, and accessories, positioned as a gift box. Runs $49.95 to $99.95 per box depending on the tier.

What works: it is fine as a one-time gift. Someone who does not know golf gear can buy it and hand it over without embarrassment.

What does not work: as a recurring subscription it is the same apparel gamble as the others, just smaller. The golf balls are usually mid-tier stock you would not pick on your own.

Verdict: buy it as a gift once, never as a subscription.

4. Stitch Golf: $12.99 per Month

Stitch is a luxury golf bag and apparel brand, and its “$12.99 a month” is a community and discount membership, not a gear box. You get member pricing, early access to drops, and the like.

What works: if you already buy Stitch bags and want a standing discount, the math can work.

What does not work: it is not a subscription box. If you signed up expecting a monthly surprise of gear, this is not that. It is a loyalty program wearing a subscription costume.

Verdict: skip unless you are already a Stitch customer.

5. Random Golf Club: $12.99 per Month (plus $89 Member Box)

Random Golf Club is a community first and a box second. The $12.99 monthly membership is community access, event invites, and content. The $89 Member Box is a one-time or annual purchase with a bag tag, tees, a magazine, and a felt tee bag.

What works: it is honest about what it is. You are buying a community, not a mystery of gear. If you want to meet local golfers and follow the brand, $13 a month is a defensible spend.

What does not work: the $89 Member Box is mostly merch, not training value. The tees and bag tag are nice, but that is $89 of branding.

Verdict: the only subscription I would not talk you out of, if community is what you actually want.

The Smarter Way to Spend the Money

A year of the cheapest real gear box (ShortPar4 Fairway) is $720. Skip the box and that $720 buys the training aids these companies stuff into their “accessories” slots:

That is $157 and every one of them does something to your score. The other $560 goes toward range balls, which is the actual secret to getting better. The subscription box industry would rather you not do this math.

What I Would Actually Buy

If you are buying for yourself: skip every box and buy the four aids above. You will spend less and own the exact tools you need. You get better instead of a pile of shirts.

If you are buying a gift for a golfer who has everything: MullyBox at $125 is the least likely to disappoint, because the accessories are real and quarterly shipping means less filler.

If the recipient already has all the gear and wants community: Random Golf Club at $13 a month is the only one that is honest about selling a community rather than a surprise.

The one sentence to remember: a subscription box is a recurring bill for items you did not choose. Buy the $30 alignment sticks and the $47 Smart Ball instead, and spend the difference on range balls.
