Best Grip Trainer for Beginners: The $17 SKLZ Won
I played for two years with a grip so strong I could see four knuckles at address. Nobody told me. I just kept slicing and buying new drivers, convinced the equipment was the problem.
The problem was my hands. A bad grip dooms everything else. Swing plane, face control, distance. All of it starts with how you hold the club. The right grip trainer fixes this in a week and costs about the same as a sleeve of balls.
I’ve tested seven of these things. Four are worth your money. One is a waste of it.
1. SKLZ Grip Trainer: $17
This is the standard. A molded plastic attachment that snaps onto any club and forces your hands into the correct position. It has guide lines for the V between your thumb and index finger, and the molded shape makes a bad grip feel immediately wrong.
It’s the #1 best seller in golf swing trainers on Amazon for a reason. 4.5 stars from thousands of reviews. It fits on any standard grip from driver to wedge, and it’s small enough to leave in your bag.
The downside: it only works for right-handed golfers. Lefties, you’re out of luck. And the plastic clamp can feel slightly loose on thinner grips.
Verdict: Buy it. For $17, this is the one. Snap it on before every range session for 10 practice swings. I keep mine in the bag. I use it for 30 seconds before I hit a single ball. My hands find the right position now without thinking about it. That’s the whole point.
2. Lamkin Training Grip: $10-$15
Unlike the SKLZ which clips onto an existing grip, the Lamkin is an actual grip you install on a club. It has molded finger positions that show you exactly where each finger goes. Scottie Scheffler uses one. Good enough for the world #1, good enough for you.
The advantage over the SKLZ is that it feels like a real grip. You can actually hit balls with it installed. The disadvantage is that it lives on one club permanently. You can’t just snap it on and off.
If you have an old 7-iron sitting in the garage, install the Lamkin on it. That’s your dedicated grip-training club. For $10-$15, it’s the cheapest option that actually works.
Verdict: Buy it if you have a spare club. Better feel than the SKLZ but less convenient.
3. SuperStroke Training Grip: $15
SuperStroke is famous for putter grips, but their training grip is for full-swing clubs. Same idea as the Lamkin: a molded grip you install permanently that shows correct hand placement. The SuperStroke version has slightly more pronounced finger channels and a firmer rubber compound.
At $15 from SuperStroke’s site, it’s priced right. The downside is the same as the Lamkin: it lives on one club. You can’t move it around.
Verdict: Worth it. Basically interchangeable with the Lamkin. Pick whichever is in stock.
4. G-Rip Grip Trainer: $18-$20
The G-Rip is the SKLZ’s main competitor in the snap-on category. It uses a slightly different mold with deeper finger grooves and a textured surface. Some golfers prefer the feel. Others find the grooves too aggressive.
The G-Rip is harder to find on Amazon than the SKLZ and tends to be $1-$3 more expensive. It works the same way. Snap on, grip it, build muscle memory.
Verdict: Fine, but just buy the SKLZ. The G-Rip isn’t worse, but it’s not better either. The SKLZ is cheaper and easier to find.
What to Avoid
The cheap Amazon knockoffs at $8-$10. They look like the SKLZ but the plastic is softer, the mold lines are less precise, and the clamp breaks after a few weeks. You’ll save $7 and buy a replacement in a month. The brands that sell 10,000 units a month at $17.98 are not the same as the ones selling 500 units at $8.99. There’s a reason for that.
What I’d Actually Buy
Get the SKLZ Grip Trainer for $17. Leave it in your bag. Before every range session, snap it on for 10 practice swings. Then take it off and hit balls. Do this for two weeks.
If you want to go further, grab a Lamkin training grip for $12 and install it on an old club. That’s your at-home reinforcement tool. Total investment: $29. That’s less than a dozen Pro V1s you’ll lose anyway.
The grip is the foundation of your swing. Everything else builds on it. Spend $17 and fix it. Your driver will thank you.
